Why Belgaum's industrial belt matters for packing wood

Belagavi sits on a peculiar industrial spine — a foundry cluster of more than 300 units feeding automotive, hydraulic and pump castings into pan-India OEMs, layered with a fast-growing aerospace components base anchored by the HAL supplier ecosystem and the Aequs SEZ at Kanagala. Every casting that leaves a Belgaum foundry needs to ride on something, and every aerospace machined part bound for HAL Bangalore, Tata, or an export consignee needs an ISPM-15 stamped crate to clear the dock. That is the wood-and-plywood demand pattern we serve from Kochi. This page lays out what the Cochin Wood group ships into Belagavi, how the logistics work over the 750 km lane, and which grade actually fits which load — written for the procurement person who already knows what a 1200x1000 mm pallet looks like.

The Belgaum industrial picture

The packaging demand in Belagavi does not come from one estate — it comes from a belt. Knowing the belt helps us right-size the trucks and the dispatch frequency.

  • Udyambag and Machhe industrial areas — the historic foundry heartland. Grey iron, SG iron, alloy steel castings. Heavy unit weights, irregular geometry, machined faces that mark easily. This is where most of our packing-grade plywood and dense hardwood runners go.
  • KIADB Auto Park, Halaga — newer, tier-1 and tier-2 auto component manufacturers. Mix of castings, forgings, machined assemblies. Cleaner packing standard, more pallet-and-box than open crate.
  • Aequs SEZ, Kanagala — aerospace precision machining, sheet metal, surface treatment. Export-heavy. ISPM-15 heat-treated stamp is non-negotiable here, and the cosmetic standard on the crate is higher because end-consignees inspect.
  • Honaga and Kakati MIDC-adjacent units — pumps, valves, hydraulics. Mid-weight castings, recurring monthly volume — ideal for a standing pallet-and-cap programme rather than one-off crates.
  • Sambra and the airport-adjacent cluster — emerging aero MRO and defence-linked work, smaller volumes but tight quality specs.

Across these belts the dominant wood-packaging needs collapse to four things: packing-grade plywood sheets for box panels, hardwood runners and battens for skids, ready-made ISPM-15 crates for export consignments, and container flooring plywood for trailers and shipping containers being refurbished in the region.

What we ship into Belgaum

Packing-grade plywood — sheet specs

Our packing range is built around hardwood and rubberwood cores in MR (moisture-resistant) bonding, designed for box and case panels that must hold a heavy casting without splitting along the edge nail line. Standard sizes are 8x4 ft and 7x4 ft; thicknesses commonly pulled by Belagavi buyers:

ThicknessTypical use in Belagavi
6 mmLid panels on light pump-housing boxes
8 mmSide panels for medium auto-component cases
12 mmBase and side panels for foundry castings up to ~500 kg
16-18 mmHeavy crate bases, container flooring patches, base of aerospace export crates

Face veneer can be specified as commercial hardwood for cost-driven domestic packing, or Okoume for export work where the buyer wants a cleaner outer face and lighter sheet weight. Okoume is a face-veneer option on our packing and BWR grades, not a separate grade.

Crates — ISPM-15 and domestic

For export shipments out of Belagavi — which mostly route through Nhava Sheva (JNPT) or Bangalore air — the crate must be built from heat-treated wood and carry the ISPM-15 mark with the IPPC logo, country code, treatment provider code and treatment code. We supply both:

  • Closed crates — fully boarded plywood faces over a hardwood frame; used for aerospace components, precision machined parts, anything where dust and rough handling damage the load.
  • Open crates and skid-and-cap — hardwood frame with strategic plywood panels; used for foundry castings where weight is high but cosmetic protection matters less.

Cleat thickness, runner cross-section and lag-bolt pattern are sized to the actual unit weight; we ask for the load weight, dimensions and lifting method (forklift, crane sling, both) before quoting.

Pallets

The two pallet footprints we ship most into the KIADB and Aequs side of Belagavi:

  • 1200 x 1000 mm — the de-facto Asian export pallet, fits standard 20 ft and 40 ft containers efficiently for two-rows-wide loading.
  • 1200 x 800 mm — Euro pallet, asked for when the consignee is in EU automotive supply chain.

Four-way entry, double-deck, with hardwood top and bottom boards and ISPM-15 treated stringers for export. For repeated indoor use inside a KIADB plant we often supply non-treated rubberwood pallets at a lower price point.

Container flooring plywood

A smaller but recurring line into Belagavi is 28 mm container flooring plywood — heavy-duty multi-ply hardwood board used to repair shipping container floors and to line trailer beds for foundry haulage. We supply in standard 2400 x 1160 mm sheets or cut to floor pattern on request.

Kochi-to-Belgaum logistics

The lane is roughly 750 km road from our Perumbavoor / Kochi dispatch yards to Belagavi. Typical road route runs NH 66 up the Kerala-Karnataka coast to Karwar, then NH 748 / NH 4A inland through Anmod ghat into Belagavi — or the alternative inland route via Mangaluru and Hubballi when the ghats are weather-affected during monsoon. Transit time we plan against:

  • Full-truck-load (FTL), 20 ft / 32 ft trailer — 48 to 60 hours door-to-door, ex-Kochi to KIADB / Udyambag.
  • Part-load through aggregator — 3 to 5 working days; viable for small crate batches and pallet top-ups.
  • Container stuffing at Cochin Port and rail/road to ICD Belagavi — used when the buyer wants the wood landed under an export-linked GST flow.

For Belagavi exporters whose finished goods route through JNPT, it is often cleaner to manufacture the crate and pallet at our Kerala yard, ship FTL straight to the packing line in Belagavi, and let the consignment move out on the same crate to Nhava Sheva — no double-handling, single ISPM-15 stamp.

Decision rules — which grade for which Belgaum load

A practical rule-of-thumb our packing-line foremen use when a Belagavi buyer asks "what do I actually need":

  1. Domestic foundry casting, road movement within India — commercial hardwood packing-grade plywood, 12 mm sides, 18 mm base, hardwood runners. No need to pay for Okoume face or heat treatment.
  2. Aerospace or precision component, export — Okoume-faced packing-grade plywood or BWR-bonded board on an ISPM-15 heat-treated hardwood frame. Closed crate, screw-fixed not nailed, with desiccant pockets if the consignee specifies.
  3. Heavy pump or hydraulic assembly, sea export — 18 mm packing-grade plywood base, hardwood runners with chamfered ends for fork entry, lag-bolted top cap, ISPM-15 stamp.
  4. Construction-linked shuttering work at Belagavi infrastructure sites — film-faced shuttering plywood, separate product line, quoted on dimension and re-use count expectation.

If the load is borderline, we would rather over-engineer the crate base by one plywood thickness step than under-spec — a failed crate at Anmod ghat is more expensive than the extra 6 mm of board.

FAQ

Do you stamp ISPM-15 in your own yard?

Yes, the crates and pallets we supply for export work are heat-treated and carry the IPPC stamp with the registered treatment provider code. Documentation pack includes the ISPM-15 certificate, packing list dimensions and weights.

What is the minimum order for delivery to Belagavi?

For plywood sheets we typically plan in full-truck-load units to keep freight economics sensible over the 750 km lane. For crates and pallets, smaller batches can ride on a part-load or piggyback on a sheet consignment — talk to us about batch sizing, we will work out the truck plan.

Can you match a foundry's existing crate drawing?

Yes. Share the existing drawing or even photographs with dimensions, the unit weight, and any lifting points required. We can replicate to your spec or value-engineer the runner pattern if the existing design is over-built.
