Plywood, crates and pallets into Salem's steel-and-textile belt
Salem is one of those Tamil Nadu cities where the packing requirement is rarely about retail furniture and almost always about industrial despatch. SAIL's Salem Steel Plant rolls stainless and carbon flat products that have to leave the gate without edge damage. Magnesite and bauxite move from mines around Salem and Namakkal in tonnage that punishes thin pallets. The textile mills along the Salem-Erode corridor periodically import or shift machinery — looms, ring frames, knitting machines — that need crating built to survive multi-leg road transit. Each of these flows pulls a different plywood specification, and getting that match right is the difference between a clean delivery and a returned consignment.
This page is a working note from the Cochin Wood group's despatch side on what Salem typically asks for, what we actually load on a Kochi-to-Salem truck, and how we decide between packing-grade ply, Okoume and shuttering ply for the city's recurring load profiles.
The Salem industrial picture
Three buyer clusters in and around Salem drive most of our enquiries.
1. Salem Steel Plant and the downstream cold-rolling belt
SAIL's Salem Steel Plant sits on the Salem-Mettur Dam Road and is the anchor for a wider ecosystem of stainless steel cold rollers, polishers and tube makers operating out of Pottaneri, Suramangalam and the SIDCO Industrial Estate at Suramangalam. Coil-edge protection, slit-strip pallets and export crates for kitchenware sheet stock are the common asks. The packing is unforgiving — stainless sheet shows every dent.
2. Steel forging, foundry and engineering — SIDCO Industrial Estate, Kannankurichi
The SIDCO estate at Kannankurichi and the smaller pockets at Ayothiapattinam carry forging shops, foundries and general-engineering units that ship pump components, valves and steel castings. These are the classic ISPM-15-stamped crate buyers — heavy, dense parts that need a stiff base, gusseted corners and a 12mm or 18mm packing-grade plywood skin.
3. Textile and home-furnishing — Salem-Erode-Tiruppur corridor
Salem sits on the same yarn-and-fabric corridor as Erode and Tiruppur. Mill expansions, second-hand machinery imports through Chennai and Tuticorin, and finished-goods exports of made-ups all generate plywood case demand. Textile machinery cases tend to be larger in volume but lighter in density, which changes the panel choice.
Add the magnesite and refractory units near Salem, the granite cluster around Vadapudupatti, and the auto-component vendors feeding Hosur and Coimbatore plants, and the city's packing-plywood pull is steady year-round.
What we ship into Salem
Packing-grade plywood — the workhorse panel
The bulk of what leaves our yard for Salem is commercial / rubberwood packing-grade plywood in the 8 ft x 4 ft format. This is the panel used to skin export crates and box pallets for engineering goods. Thickness selection is driven by the load:
| Load profile | Typical thickness | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Light textile machinery cases, made-ups, finished goods | 6mm / 8mm | Skin only — frame carries the load. |
| General engineering, pump and valve crates | 10mm / 12mm | The default for SIDCO Kannankurichi enquiries. |
| Stainless coil edge protection, sheet stock cases | 14mm / 15mm | Stiff enough to absorb forklift contact. |
| Steel casting, forging, heavy machine bases | 16mm / 18mm | Used with hardwood runners; takes the weight directly. |
All packing-grade rates are quoted ex-Kochi factory; GST and freight to Salem extra. Thickness convention follows the trade norm — what is sold as 12mm is the standard packing 11+ mm, and 18mm is 17+ mm. The 6mm and 8mm panels are dispatched at face value.
Crate construction — pine, jackwood and rubberwood frames
For Salem buyers who want fully built ISPM-15 crates rather than just panels, we build to drawing using heat-treated jackwood or rubberwood runners and stiles, with packing-grade plywood skinning. Jackwood hardwood is supplied at the standard quarter-inch-minus tolerance. Rubberwood runners are cut to the size specified on the crate drawing. ISPM-15 stamping is applied at the factory for export consignments leaving via Chennai, Tuticorin or Cochin ports.
Pallets
Two-way and four-way entry pallets for stainless coil, casting and textile machinery dispatch. Standard sizes — 1200 x 1000 mm, 1200 x 800 mm, 1100 x 1100 mm — are most common, but Salem despatch teams often need non-standard footprints to suit a specific container stuffing plan. We build to the size given.
Container flooring and case bases
For exporters moving heavy items through Chennai and Tuticorin, container flooring sheets and reinforced case bases in 18mm packing-grade ply are a recurring requirement. These are also used for sea-worthy boxing of granite blocks and refractory bricks.
Kochi-to-Salem logistics
Salem is roughly 360 km by road from our Kochi/Ernakulam yard via NH 544 through the Walayar-Coimbatore corridor and NH 544 / NH 44 onward to Salem. Loaded transit on a standard 32-ft or 22-ft container truck is typically one overnight run — vehicles leaving Ernakulam in the evening clock into Salem the following morning. We dispatch in both single-customer full-truck loads and consolidated part-loads where the order size doesn't justify a full vehicle.
For Salem buyers exporting via Tuticorin or Chennai, the more economical route is often to consolidate the crate-build at our end, despatch the finished crates to Salem for fit-out around the machinery, and then truck the crated load directly to the port. Where the export consignment is large enough, we can ship CFS-direct from Kochi instead.
Decision rules — which panel for which job
Packing grade vs Okoume
For domestic-only despatch within India, the commercial / rubberwood packing-grade panel is almost always the right answer — it carries the load, takes the nails, and the cost works. Okoume comes in when the buyer needs a lighter face veneer for an export crate where weight is being charged volumetrically, or when the consignee specifies a clean, light face for re-use. Most Salem packers don't need Okoume unless they are dealing with a European or GCC consignee who has called it out.
Packing grade vs shuttering ply
Shuttering ply is built for concrete formwork — film-faced, BWP-grade, designed for wet-and-release cycles. It is not the right panel for crate-skinning. Salem buyers building site infrastructure (the Salem Steel Plant expansion contractors, road and bridge projects on NH 44, real-estate projects around Hasthampatti and Fairlands) use shuttering ply; everyone else stays on packing grade.
Single-batch vs running supply
One-off crate jobs are fine on spot quotes. Salem buyers who crate every week — typical of the SIDCO Kannankurichi engineering shops and the stainless cold rollers — usually move to a monthly indent against a fixed price, with thickness mix locked in advance. This is the better commercial setup for both sides.
FAQ
Do you supply ISPM-15 stamped crates ready for export?
Yes. Crates are built using heat-treated wood and stamped at the factory before despatch. The crate documentation is provided with the consignment.
What is the minimum order for a Kochi-to-Salem despatch?
Full-truck loads are the cleanest economics. For smaller volumes we look at part-loads on shared vehicles running into Coimbatore and Salem; the freight per sheet is higher, but workable for trial orders or single-crate jobs.
Can you build crates to a drawing we send, or only standard sizes?
Built to drawing. Send the case GA — outer dimensions, gross weight, lifting points and any ISPM-15 / sea-worthy callouts — and we quote against that. Standard pallets we hold to known footprints; crates are job-specific.
Asking for a quote
If you are planning a Salem despatch — coil packing, engineering crates, pallets for a SIDCO unit, or container flooring for an export — send the thickness, sheet size, monthly quantity and delivery point and we will revert with a Salem-landed price and a despatch window. Request a quote or browse the resource hub for the panel specs, crate construction notes and packing-ply price card. Quotes are firm in writing; rates are ex-Kochi with GST and Salem freight quoted separately so you see the full landed cost before confirming.
