Plywood Supply to Sivakasi

Why Sivakasi runs on careful packing

Sivakasi is one of the few towns in India where the packing list matters as much as the product list. The cluster pushes out roughly 80% of the country's fireworks, a very large share of safety matches, and a heavy stream of offset-printed cartons, calendars and labels for FMCG brands across the country. Every one of those outputs has to leave town on a truck — and almost every one of them needs a wooden crate, pallet or board behind it. That is the conversation we have with buyers in Sivakasi every week, and it is why the Cochin Wood group, with operations in Perumbavoor since 1986, has built a steady Tamil Nadu lane out of Kochi.

The Sivakasi industrial picture

The town sits in Virudhunagar district, about 80 km from Madurai. Industry is concentrated in a handful of belts that each have their own packing logic. If you supply plywood into Sivakasi, you need to understand those belts before you quote, because the crate spec follows the cargo.

Fireworks belt — Anaikuttam, Vembakottai, Thiruthangal

The fireworks units are clustered south and west of the town along the Anaikuttam, Vembakottai and Thiruthangal stretches, with hundreds of licensed factories operating under PESO rules. These units ship Class-3 and Class-4 explosives to dealers nationwide. The packing requirement is unusually strict: outer wooden cases that resist crush, sealed lids, no free play between the inner cartons and the case wall, and lumber that does not splinter sharply on impact. A second crate failure in transit is not just a refund — it is a regulatory incident.

Matchstick and safety-match cluster

Safety match production is spread between Sivakasi town, Kovilpatti and the smaller satellite units around Sattur. The cargo is lighter than fireworks but very dense per pallet, and the destinations are largely domestic distributors plus some export through Tuticorin. The typical ask is plywood for case lids, pallet decks and corner protection — not high-grade material, but consistent thickness and consistent moisture content.

Offset printing and packaging cluster

Sivakasi has more than 400 offset and flexo printing units, several of them running Heidelberg, Komori and KBA presses. When a press is upgraded, retired or relocated, it leaves on a custom crate. New machinery from Europe arrives in heavy-duty ISPM-15 cases that the local fabricators then refurbish or rebuild. Plywood for printing-machinery cases needs to be flat, dimensionally stable and rated for the load — this is where our 18 mm and 16 mm boards move best.

What we ship to Sivakasi

The Sivakasi lane is dominated by three SKUs out of our range. The mix shifts month to month depending on whether the buyer is a crate fabricator, a direct exporter or a printing-machinery mover.

Packing-grade plywood — the workhorse

For fireworks cases, matchstick cartons and general crating, the standard ask is commercial rubberwood-core packing-grade plywood in 8 ft x 4 ft sheets. Thicknesses move as follows:

ThicknessTypical Sivakasi end-use
6 mmInner partitions, carton stiffeners
8 mmLight crate sides, match-case lids
10-12 mmFireworks outer case walls, general crating
14-16 mmPallet top decks, heavier export crates
18 mmPrinting machinery cases, pallet stringers

All boards leave the facility ex-factory; GST and transport are quoted separately. Buyers typically pull 6-8 trucks a month against repeat orders, and pricing follows the standard CWI commercial card with no carve-outs for the lane.

Crates and pallets — built or supplied as components

Many Sivakasi crate makers prefer to fabricate locally and just buy the panel material from us. For buyers who want finished crates, we ship knocked-down case kits cut to the customer's drawing — sides, top, bottom, internal partitions and a separate hardwood frame. Standard pallet footprints we ship are 1200 x 1000 mm (export), 1200 x 800 mm (Euro) and 1100 x 1100 mm (domestic FMCG). ISPM-15 heat-treatment is arranged on request for the export crates.

Container flooring and shuttering ply

For 20 ft and 40 ft container reefer and dry-van rebuilds — a smaller but steady demand from Tuticorin-bound exporters using Sivakasi as a consolidation point — we supply 28 mm container-grade flooring panels. The same buyers occasionally take BWR shuttering ply for in-plant civil works. Shuttering ply is also used by the building contractors expanding the new warehousing parks along the Madurai-Tuticorin NH-38 corridor.

Kochi to Sivakasi logistics

The road distance from our Perumbavoor consolidation point to Sivakasi is roughly 430 km via Kambam-Theni-Madurai (the Bodi-Theni ghat route) or about 470 km via the longer Kanyakumari side. We default to the Theni route because it shaves 6-8 hours off the round-trip and avoids the Coimbatore congestion.

  • Transit time: 14-18 hours door-to-door for a single-driver 20-ton truck; 10-12 hours with a relay driver.
  • Vehicle: 32 ft single-axle for full loads (~440 sheets of 12 mm); 24 ft for half-loads.
  • Cut-off: trucks dispatched by 14:00 IST from Perumbavoor reach Sivakasi industrial estates by next-morning unloading.
  • Port option: for export buyers, factory-stuffed containers can clear through Tuticorin (V.O. Chidambaranar Port), ~150 km from Sivakasi, instead of the longer Kochi-port route.

For most buyers, road from Kochi is cheaper and faster than road from Yamunanagar or Kandla. That is the structural reason this lane works.

Which grade for which Sivakasi load

The decision is rarely about "best ply." It is about matching the board to the cargo and the journey. A few operator rules we apply when quoting:

  • Use packing-grade commercial ply for fireworks cases, matchstick cartons, domestic FMCG pallets and short-haul crates. This is 90% of the Sivakasi volume.
  • Use Okoume-faced packing ply only when the buyer needs a cleaner face for stencilling, brand printing or export presentation — typical for premium-segment exporters and certain printing-machinery cases bound for Europe.
  • Use BWR shuttering ply for civil works on warehouse expansions, not for cargo crates. It is a different product and customers sometimes confuse the two.
  • Use 28 mm container-grade flooring only for reefer or dry-van floor rebuilds. Do not substitute structural ply.

Frequently asked questions

Can you supply fireworks-grade crates that meet PESO transport rules?

We supply the plywood panels and case kits to the buyer's drawing. PESO compliance — explosive class marking, lid sealing, certification — is handled by the fireworks unit itself or its packing contractor. Our role is to deliver clean, defect-free boards with consistent thickness and stable moisture so the case fabricator has no surprises.

What is the minimum order quantity for a Sivakasi delivery?

A full 32 ft truckload is the most cost-efficient drop. For smaller buyers we run consolidated loads where two or three units in the same industrial belt share a truck — most often a Sivakasi-Sattur-Kovilpatti combined drop.

How are payments handled for new buyers?

First order is typically 100% advance against proforma invoice, then we move repeat customers to a partial-advance + balance-against-LR-copy model after 2-3 clean cycles. GST invoicing is standard.
